The Weimar Republic as reflected in its constitution

Permanent exhibition

Sonntag, 11. August 2019, 12.00 Uhr

The Weimar constitution was signed on 11th August 1919 – exactly 100 years ago today. This tour looks closely at its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the mistrust it was met with from both the left and right. From the very beginning, the first democracy in Germany faced significant challenges: the fulfilment of the Treaty of Versailles, political-ideological warfare, and economic crises. Nevertheless, over a significant period of time, the liberal state order was defended from radical forces. The democratic politicians in the Weimar coalition also understood that it was necessary to activate great social-political reforms from within domestic politics.
